This guide offers a bibliography of English literature with comments on principal editions, biographies, and critical works. The guide contains inter-chapters that provide reinterpretations of the principal periods of English literature in light of modern (as of 1965) research, as well as two final sections summarizing the literary criticism that exists in English and recent (again, as of 1965) scholarship in the field. Authors are arranged chronologically. The book is intended for students and general readers, but the last chapter on literary scholarship will be of interest to researchers as well. Bateson was University Lecturer in English Literature at Oxford and a Fellow and Tutor of Corpus Christi College.
