Our Living Language Speakers of some scattered varieties of American English sometimes use I'm instead of I've or I have in present perfect constructions, as in

As we have come to learn, she is a gifted writer with a depth of faith unusual for someone her age. Nussbaum's latest article, about her trip to Uganda ("Slowly by Slowly," December 17, 2004), is a moving example of her talents. I found her reminder that we "cannot bring Christ to Uganda because he is waiting for us there" a profound answer to the old Baltimore Catechism A Catechism of Christian Doctrine, Prepared and Enjoined by Order of the Third Council of Baltimore (or, simply, the Baltimore Catechism) was the de facto standard Catholic school text in the United States from 1885 to the 1960s.  question: "Where is God?"
