Tom's dilemma was that he was required to take customers of his small business to lunch. However, as an ethical vegetarian, he didn't want to pay for meat dishes that they might order.

When Randy Cohen addressed this concern in his column, Tom's letter helped to bring his beliefs to a national audience. We would like to remind VJ readers that even simple activities, such as writing a letter, can further awareness about and acceptance of vegetarianism vegetarianism, theory and practice of eating only fruits and vegetables, thus excluding animal flesh, fish, or fowl and often butter, eggs, and milk.
