Without a single top 20 finish all year, the 25-year-old from Ashington came in with a five under par 67.

The giant Ferrie, winner of last year's Spanish Open, birdied six of the first 11 holes at the Warwickshire venue and, after bogeys at the next two, made a two on the 201yd 15th.

He was left with a virtual tap-in at the last to complete his fine day's work and, although it circled the cup, it did drop.

Howell, just back from a six-week injury lay-off, led the field after an opening round of 66.

"I didn't know what to expect, but walking on to the first tee was a delight for me; the support was fabulous," said the 40-year-old Scot.

"I will remember that for a long time.

"It was important to play golf and put other parts of my life aside and get on with what I do best. It was nice to have the phone turned off for six hours.

"I gave serious thought to delaying my comeback, but I'm glad I'm here.

"This was a big hurdle to get over - it's going to take six months or something to play to my ability again and I thought I might as well start sooner or later."
