Eighty year old Miles Tipton was a high school and YMCA swim coach for many years. After retirement, he began competitive swimming and track and field in the Massachusetts Senior Games in 1991. In 1997, after completing treatment for stage four throat cancer, he won four gold medals and two silver medals. Four of his daughters participated as well, and among them they earned an impressive 18 medals. In June this year, all five family members competed at Springfield College's Linkletter Natatorium. This year Mr. Tipton won gold in the 100 m backstroke and breaststroke, and in the 200 m backstroke. He received silver medals in the 50 m backstroke and breaststroke. His daughters were also competitive, sometimes racing against each other. Among the sisters, there were 13 gold medals won, three silver and two bronze. All five family members have qualified for the National Senior Games competition.
