A Dose Of News: Neurocrine Biosciences Inc. announced what it called positive preliminary results from part of a phase two study for its drug candidate to treat endometriosis endometriosis (ĕn'dəmē'trē-ō`sĭs), a condition in which small pieces of the endometrium (the lining of the uterus) migrate to other places in the pelvic area. . The drug is a gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptor Gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptor (GNRHR) is a member of the seven-transmembrane, G-protein coupled receptor (GPCR) family. It is expressed on the surface of pituitary gonadotrope cells as well as lymphocytes, breast, ovary, and prostate.  antagonist known as NBI-56418.

Endometriosis affects 5.5 million women in the United States and Canada, according to the Milwaukee-based Endometriosis Association. It is a disorder of the female reproductive system reproductive system, in animals, the anatomical organs concerned with production of offspring. In humans and other mammals the female reproductive system produces the female reproductive cells (the eggs, or ova) and contains an organ in which development of the fetus  where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside of the uterus, often on the fallopian tubes.

, double-blind, placebo-controlled study included 68 patients with endometriosis and lasted three months, Neurocrine said Jan. 8.

Patients received a 50-milligram dose, a 100-milligram dose or a placebo, all administered twice daily. Of the symptoms of endometriosis, painful menstruation showed the most improvement when using the medication, the company reported. After 12 weeks of treatment, 81 percent of women in the 100-milligram group had no pain from menstruation.

The trial was the second part of a phase two trial for the drug. Neurocrine announced it has initiated an expanded six-month study in several hundred patients with endometriosis to assess the impact of its treatment on, among other things, bone mineral density bone mineral density
