A disservice to Jocelyn Elders.


I read the cover article of the current issue of Color-Lines ("What Your Doctor Won't See ..."). Overall, a really useful article. But, I was brought to tears when I saw David Satcher David M. Satcher (b. March 2, 1941) was the 16th Surgeon General of the United States from 1998 to 2002 and the Assistant Secretary for Health from 1998 to 2001.  identified as the first Black Surgeon General The U.S. Surgeon General is charged with the protection and advancement of health in the United States. Since the 1960s the surgeon general has become a highly visible federal public health official, speaking out against known health risks such as tobacco use, and promoting disease  of the U.S. No, no, no! Not again? And by ColorLines?

Can you put a pretty visible and humble apology apology [Gr.,=defense], literary work that defends, justifies, or clarifies an author's ideas or point of view. Unlike the ordinary use of the word, the literary use neither implies that wrong has been done nor expresses regret.  in the next issue of the magazine? Not just a dry correction. But, please, an authentic that-was-a-serious-mistake acknowledgement? And also maybe consider ways to think about how a future story could highlight and remind us of all we have to learn about race, gender and sexuality from the story of this truth-telling African-American daughter of a sharecropper. There are so many intersecting in·ter·sect
