A dissertation-inspired book by Ken Burak, assistant professor of philosophy at Northampton Community College in Bethlehem, Pa., has been published by VDM Verlag publishing company. According to Burak, "Logic and Resistance -Reading Hegel in the Age of the War on Terrorism" brings together two great intellectual traditions--the idealism of 19th-century German philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and the views of 20th-century psychoanalyst Jacques-Marie-Emile Lacan--to try to make sense of the war on terrorism. According to an abstract of the book, a Lacan-inspired reading of Hegel leads Burak to conclude that the current anti-war movement must avoid repeating the same phantasmic structure as the war it deplores. Burak, who received his bachelor's degree from Penn State University, his master's from the University of Leuven in Belgium and his Ph.D. from DePaul University in Chicago, hopes his dissertation will open a new, deeper level of debate on the war on terrorism.
