A current resource and long-range planning: inescapably, the Baptist History and Heritage Society lives in three time zones. It deals with the past. It provides resources for churches today. It surges into tomorrow on the basis of its long-range plans. (An Executive Note).A three-time-zone life requires a careful balancing act. If we spend all of our time in yesteryear yes·ter·year n. 1. The year before the present year. 2. Time past; yore. yes , we become irrelevant. If we spend all of our time thinking about the future, we waste our heritage. If we spend all of our time in the present, we abandon origins and possibilities. Jesus is our model. Past tense past tense n. A verb tense used to express an action or a condition that occurred in or during the past. For example, in While she was sewing, he read aloud, was sewing and read are in the past tense. Noun 1. future tense - a verb tense that expresses actions or states in the future future , he pointed to eternal life. A New and Present Resource Most BH&HS members know about our efforts in the past: our journal, pamphlets, "books, annual meetings, and other publications and events. Let me introduce you to our newest, most present resource: A How-to Kit for Your Church's History. This kit serves as an excellent resource for church history committees, churches celebrating anniversaries, and Baptist history programs that serve local-church history interests. The most important item in the kit is A How-to Manual for Your Church's History. This manual provides up-to-date guidelines for church history committee work. It shows how to celebrate a church anniversary, how to write and publish a church's history, how to observe Baptist Heritage Sunday, how to locate and preserve church records, how to display and exhibit a church's history, and how to communicate, photograph, and dramatize dram·a·tize v. dram·a·tized, dram·a·tiz·ing, dram·a·tiz·es v.tr. 1. To adapt (a literary work) for dramatic presentation, as in a theater or on television or radio. 2. a church's story. Scheduled for release on December 1, 2002, the kit will sell for $27.95. However, orders postmarked by November 30, 2002, will pay only $24.95 per kit. You can order by calling 800-966-2278. Or copy, complete, and submit the order form on cover page 3 of this issue. A Long-range Plan Recognizing that the BH&HS needs to set goals and move into the future aggressively, the society appointed a long-range planning committee planning committee n (in local government) → comité m de planificación on March 23, 2001. That committee presented its recommendations on June 21, 2002, and the BH&HS unanimously adopted them in a five-year plan Five-Year Plan, Soviet economic practice of planning to augment agricultural and industrial output by designated quotas for a limited period of usually five years. of action (see the details in the News Notes on p. 110.). The adopted plans relate to critical dimensions of BH&HS life: fundraising, membership goals and fees, relationships with various kinds of Baptists, new publications, the addition of more full-time employees, enlargement of the BH&HS endowment fund Noun 1. endowment fund - the capital that provides income for an institution endowment patrimony - a church endowment chantry - an endowment for the singing of Masses , Baptist history scholarships, and awards for students. The Long-range Planning Committee also discussed ways to enhance services, communications, public relations public relations, activities and policies used to create public interest in a person, idea, product, institution, or business establishment. By its nature, public relations is devoted to serving particular interests by presenting them to the public in the most , and marketing. History programming requires constant attention. Ideally, every BH&HS member will consciously choose to help make the adopted long-range plan a living reality. For that to happen by 2007, let me suggest that you consider supporting the society by doing five simple things: * Attend the society's annual meetings * Make an annual, personal, financial donation * Lead your church to place the society in its annual budget * Enlist at least one new member in the BH&HS each year * Lead your church to purchase the society's resources. The BH&HS has positioned itself to make major steps forward. It has excellent directors/officers, council of advisors, and editorial board. Since January 2001, it has received financial contributions from thirty-five Baptist colleges/universities, seventeen state conventions, numerous individuals, and many churches, associations, and other organizations. It has superb office space. Together, let's personalize our plans for the future. Charles W. Deweese Executive Director-Treasurer Baptist History and Heritage Society |
