The 4 man (power forward) aligns on the weak-side block across from 1.

The 5 man (center) sets up at the top of the key.

The play is designed to get the 4 man either a layup or a short jump shot in the lane or from mid-post. Whenever the defense wants to take away one of our options, we have numerous ways to handle it.

As 3 slaps the ball, 2 breaks across hard to the corner. Note: If X2 is playing behind 2, the inbounder (3) can immediately hit 2 for the layup.

Meanwhile, 4 sets an up-screen for 5, who drives over it. Note: The defense will probably switch on this action. That is okay because:

1 can then set a screen for 4 (Diag. 2). "Screen the screener." If the defense switches, 1 will screen X4 and the same action can occur (Diag. 3).

"Diamond Reverse": This is a counter to the original "Diamond," with the personnel lining up in the same fashion.

As the 3 man slaps the ball, 2 sets up a screen for 5, who breaks hard to the head of the rim (Diag. 4). At the same time, 4 sets a back screen on X2 and 2 breaks to the corner for a potential baseline jumper (Diag. 5) "Screen the screener."

1 then sets a back screen for the 4 man coming down the lane for a layup or a stop in the mid-post for a short jumper (Diag. 6).
