A controlled study on treatment of mental depression by acupuncture plus TCM medication.The authors report here on their satisfactory results in the treatment of mental depression using a combination of acupuncture and herbs. Sixty-one cases were randomly divided into a statistically similar treatment and control group. There were roughly equal numbers of men and women, the age range was from 19-63 years, the duration of illness was from 7 months-6 years and the patients were diagnosed according to the HAMD criteria for mental depression. The treatment group took Chinese herbs and received acupuncture, and the control took Chinese herbs alone. The acupuncture points were as follows: Baihui DU-20, Shenting DU-24, Yintang (M-HN-3), Renzhong DU-26, Anmian (M-HN-54), Shanzhong REN-17, Neiguan P-6, Daling P-7, Shenmen HE-7 and Taichong LIV-3. All were given even method and manipulated every 10 minutes for 20 minutes. Herbs were given daily and acupuncture was performed every second day. The results showed that while both groups benefited greatly from treatment, the scores of the treatment group according to the HAMD criteria were significantly better than the control. The authors suggest a synergistic effect between the herbs and acupuncture. |
