HUNDREDS of classic vehicles squeezed into Nuneaton's pedestrian- priority town centre yesterday in a gleaming and glowing tribute to the motor car. Some classics dated back to the 1930s and nostalgic crowds converged on the town to admire the old favourites. Famous names included MG, Morris, Standard, Austin, Ford, Jaguar, Triumph and Riley - some of them proudly manufactured "just up the road" in Coventry. There were almost 400 vehicles of all shapes and sizes taking part in the Classic Transport Extravaganza. The show took over the whole of the pedestrianised shopping centre, including Harefield Road, Abbey Street, Coventry Street Coventry Street is a short London street, within the City of Westminster, running from Piccadilly Circus to Leicester Square. The street is the main conduit between Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square and at the weekend up to 150,000 , Newdegate Street, Queens Road and Market Place, while the New Century Way car park hosted an "auto jumble" and car club displays. Held in the grounds of Nuneaton's Arbury Hall Arbury Hall (grid reference SP335893) is a country house near Nuneaton in Warwickshire, England, and is the ancestral home of the Newdigate family, later the Newdigate-Newdegate and Fitzroy-Newdegate families. for the last 10 years, the organisers, Transtar Promotions, decided to switch it to the town centre for the first time. They had the backing of the borough council and the Chamber of Trade, anxious to promote both the town centre and new Sunday trading in Nuneaton. Tim Norton, the council's marketing manager, said: "We think this transport extravaganza might now become an annual event in the town centre. A lot of people in Nuneaton worked just up the road in the motor industry." Event organiser Geoff Price said: "It appeals to all ages. We cover everything - from vintage cars right through to the latest American sports cars. "It's not just for enthusiasts, it's for people who like a bit of nostalgia as well.' Exhibitors competed for 14 awards, and classes included kit cars, custom cars, motorcycles, commercials and American cars.
