A burning question.

QA I'm interested in burning I my own CDs. What kind of equipment should l buy and how much will it cost me?

--E. Johnson Windsor, Ontario Windsor is the southernmost city in Canada and lies at the western end of the heavily populated Quebec City-Windsor Corridor. Windsor is located directly south of Detroit and is separated from that city by the Detroit River. The city has views of the Detroit skyline.

To burn your own CDs, you'll need either a CD-R (CD-Recordable) A writable CD technology using a type of compact disc that can be recorded, but not erased (CD-Rs are "write once" discs). CD-R discs are used to master CD-ROMs, to back up data and to make copies of data for distribution.  or a CD-RW (CD-ReWritable) The only rewritable CD technology. CD-RW disks look like other CD media, but with close inspection, they have a more polished surface with a very dark blue-gray cast.  drives. A CD-R (Compact Disc-Recordable) lets you write or burn files to a CD just once--you won't be able to erase it and rewrite re·write

new information, as you can with a CD-RW (hence the ReWritable part of the name).

The kind of drive you get will depend on what you plan to do, but there are two basic things to consider before you buy: speed and cost.

The speed of the drive is important for obvious reasons: It determines how fast your drive reads and writes information onto a compact disc. On a CD-RW, you'll find three sets of numbers: the first is the speed at which it writes data, the second is the speed at which it rewrites data, and the third tells you how fast it erases the information (for example, 8x/4x/32x). The higher the number, the faster the rate of writing/rewriting/erasing.

Cost is also an important factor. CD-RWs generally sell for anywhere between $200 and $1,000, depending on the quality, as well as whether it's an internal or external drive--and whether it's bundled with software and cables.
