A black hole that goes the distance. (Astronomy). The mass of the most distant black hole known has been measured, and it's a behemoth behemoth (bē`hĭmŏth, bĭhē`–) [Heb.,=plural of beast], large, fanciful primeval monster, like Leviathan, evoking the hippopotamus mentioned in the Book of Job. . The black hole lies some 13 billion light-years away and weighs the equivalent of 3 billion suns, researchers report in the April 10 Astrophysical Journal The Astrophysical Journal, often abbreviated to ApJ, is a scientific journal covering astronomy and astrophysics. It was founded in 1895 by George Ellery Hale and James E. Keeler. It currently (October 2006) publishes three issues per month, with 500 pages per issue. Letters. To weigh the hole, astronomers examined light from the most remote quasar quasar (kwā`sär), one of a class of blue celestial objects having the appearance of stars when viewed through a telescope and currently believed to be the most distant and most luminous objects in the universe; the name is shortened from ever detected. According to theory, quasars Proper naming of quasars are by Catalogue Entry, Qxxxx±yy using B1950 coordinates, or QSO Jxxxx±yyyy using J2000 coordinates. This page lists quasars.
Using the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope UKIRT, the United Kingdom Infra-Red Telescope, is a 3.8 metre (150 inch) infrared reflecting telescope, the largest dedicated infrared (1 to 30 micrometre) telescope in the world. It is operated by the Joint Astronomy Centre in Hilo and located on Mauna Kea (Hawai'i). atop Hawaii's Manna Kea, researchers took a spectrum of the quasar light and identified radiation emitted by magnesium ions in the black hole's swirling disk. Each type of ion emits light at a specific wavelength, which under tamer conditions would show up as a narrow line in the quasar's spectrum. But the velocity of the rotating disk broadens each line of emitted radiation. The more massive the black hole, the higher the disk's velocity and the greater the broadening. By measuring the width of the magnesium-ion emission line, Chris Willott of the Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics The NRC Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics (NRC-HIA) is the leading Canadian centre for astronomy and astrophysics. Named for the Nobel laureate Gerhard Herzberg, it was formed in 1975 as part of the National Research Council of Canada in Ottawa, Ontario. in Victoria, Canada, and his colleagues deduced the disk's velocity, enabling them to calculate the black hole's mass. The finding indicates that heavyweight black holes existed 13 billion years ago, when the universe was a mere babe. Using the same technique, the team hopes to determine the mass of supermassive black holes over a range of cosmic times. Because of close connections between supermassive black holes and the cores of the galaxies in which the holes reside, measurements of these masses may reveal new details about how galaxies evolve.--R.C. |
