and kitchen, they reckoned the Bank of Scotland Bank of Scotland plc is a commercial and clearing bank, based in Edinburgh, Scotland. With a history dating to the 17th century, it is the oldest surviving bank in what is now the United Kingdom, and is the only commercial institution created by the Parliament of Scotland to  offered the best deal.

Emma said: "I've been a customer with the Bank of Scotland since I was 15, so they were the first people I asked about a home improvement loan.

"We liked the fact that we could take the loan out over 10 years, since we didn't want too long a commitment. Although we are only in our 30s, we're hoping to take early retirement in our 50s and don't want to be still paying off old debts.

"We've borrowed pounds 19,750 and, apart from the added space and comfort we've now got, it's definitely added to the value of the property."

It's because more and more customers want to upgrade their home and up its value that the Bank of Scotland launched a straightforward home improvement loan.

And the loan, secured against the property, doesn't require a further property valuation and can be used for any improvements, from adding an extra room to landscaping the garden.

To qualify, customers need to have a mortgage with Bank of Scotland, or be willing to transfer their current mortgage and select from the Bank's competitive range.

There's a free legal service worth up to pounds 500, plus a free mortgage valuation worth around pounds 150 for existing customers willing to switch.

Loans are available from pounds 2000 to pounds 50,000 and customers can select from discounted, fixed, or standard variable interest rates.
