A better herringbone makes a better gear pump.

Gear pumps with herringbone (double helical helical /hel·i·cal/ (hel´i-k'l) spiral (1).

hel·i·cal
adj.
1. Of or having the shape of a helix; spiral.

2. Having a shape approximating that of a helix.
) gears are used less commonly than single-helix or spur gears A spur gear has a cylindrical pitch surface and teeth that are parallel to the axis.1

International in Charlotte, N.C., has commercialized a method of machining what are said to be the first one-piece herringbone gear shafts for melt pumps. They are reportedly stronger and more precise than two-piece herringbone gears. Single-piece construction also allows a larger shaft journal that withstands higher torque and pressure. The herringbone's opposing steep angles--around 35[degrees] compared with the 6[degrees] angle of a single helix--prevent axial thrust and reduce pulsation pulsation /pul·sa·tion/ (pul-sa´shun) a throb, or rhythmic beat, as of the heart.

n.
1. The act of pulsating.

2. A single beat, throb, or vibration.
