Take in the colourful moods of the sleepy hill town of Aizawl. But beware, without warning, it can turn into a musical madhouse

The road climbs up through the clouds to Aizawl with multi-layered slices of rock on either side, shades of Noun 1. shades of - something that reminds you of someone or something; "aren't there shades of 1948 here?"

 different types of shale. Where it falls away there are dramatic views, the play of light and shade as the clouds throw their shadows. And then Aizawl appears on the crest of the hill and cuts off that thought.

You see a town sprawling up a hill, the approach marked by small stalls stacked with oranges, mustard leaves and kuhva, or the Mizorami paan. There are even river fish, though in the afternoon they are obviously far from their freshness. And then there are the rows of illegal moonshine moonshine Toxicology Illicitly distilled whiskey. After zingchaw, breakfast, take one of the taxis to the Bara Bazar in downtown Aizawl for fabrics like puanchei or iptichei bags, Mizoram State Government's Zohandco in Chaltlang is the best place to look, or the small shops below the Chanmari Presbyterian church.

By 4pm the town starts shutting down for the only other meal of the day. Gradually as the darkness falls the church bells ring out for evening service. And then the streets are silent till morning.

Hang out at Chanmari where most young people crowd the walkway. Join in on some impromptu jam sessions.

Visit the Luangmual Handicrafts Centre, 7 km from Aizawl, and buy the khumbeu--the ceremonial bamboo hat worn only by men in Mizoram.
