This season, however, the players on the Cal State Northridge football team embrace challenges. So last week, they met and decided to dedicate Saturday's game against Portland State to their injured in·jure

``Silvey, Mack, Pifferini, Marsalek, Romero . . .,'' quarterback Aaron Flowers said, ticking off the names of fellow starters who were not able to join him on the field for Saturday's 46-14 victory over the visiting Vikings.

The Northridge players who did play Saturday wore stickers with the numbers of injured teammates on their helmets.

Whenever they can motivate themselves, the Matadors have done so this season. And it is working.

During his tenure, he had three straight wins over Stanford (including their rosebowl season of 1999). In 1997, SJSU upset No. . And the severity of the injury linebacker Scoody Woods' suffered in Saturday's second quarter was not known.

If one or all of those players is out, Northridge has shown it will find a way to go on.

Oh, and by the way, while games against Portland State do not count in the Big Sky Conference standings because the Vikings must complete a two-year probation period after moving up from Division II, the Matadors are counting Saturday's win as their first in the conference - at least in their hearts.

``We consider it a Big Sky win, you bet,'' Baldwin said. ``They have just as many scholarships as we do. They're a member of the conference.''

Getting the first official victory in the coming weeks will likely prove more difficult. Weber State entered Saturday's 59-45 loss at No. 12 Northern Arizona Northern Arizona is dominated by the Colorado Plateau, the southern border of which in Arizona is called the Mogollon Rim. The Wildcats actually led Northern Arizona in the fourth quarter.

On Oct. 19, Montana State is at North Campus Stadium. The Matadors are at former American West Conference mate and fellow Big Sky newcomer Sacramento State on Oct. 26 before returning home to face defending national champion Montana on Nov. 2.

``There's not an easy one (remaining),'' Baldwin acknowledged Sunday. ``But I have to make them believe they can beat Weber State. And I truly believe our kids believe now.''...

He met with Matadors coach Dave Baldwin this week and discussed taking a medical redshirt.

``It's based on what the doctors say,'' said Mack, who will be graduated in May. ``If I can, I'll be back. If I could suit up tonight, I'd play.''

Baldwin, who said he will have to see if Mack played too many downs to be eligible for a medical redshirt, was reluctant to discuss Mack's return.

``We'll see what the doctors say,'' Baldwin said. ``That's going to be a tough decision, letting him come back.''

Commish visit: Big Sky Conference commissioner Doug Fullerton was at Saturday's game as part of his three-day visit to Northridge.

Fullerton met with everyone from university president Blenda Wilson to coaches.

``I'm pleased,'' the commissioner said. ``. . . I hope they can start drawing a crowd (for football games). But I think a new stadium is part of that. I don't think they can wait too long.''

Fullerton said he will be pleased as long as Northridge begins construction on a new stadium in the next three years.

Extra points: Northridge scored 68 points in the first half the entire 1995 season. With their 26 first-half points Saturday, the Matadors have scored 85 through five first halves this season. . . .
