A WEEKEND TO HELP AT RELAY, SHOW.Byline: Alex Dobuzinskis Staff Writer GLENDALE - A 24-hour relay to raise money for the American Cancer Society American Cancer Society, n.pr established in 1913, this national volunteer-based health organization is committed to the elimination of cancer through prevention and treatment and to diminishing cancer suffering through advocacy, scholarship, research, and a Glendale Sunrise Rotary Club concert for Hurricane Katrina The Glendale Relay for Life Relay For Life (often shortened to Relay) is a fundraising event of the American Cancer Society, and is now held in many other countries. It is an overnight event designed to spread awareness of cancer prevention, treatments and cures, celebrate survivorship and raise money , in which participants form teams and take turns walking or running around a track, is in its second year. The relay raised $47,000 for the American Cancer Society, and this time organizers want to collect $100,000. The event starts Saturday morning at Scholl Canyon Baseball Field. The National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS) pioneered the definition of survivor as from the time of diagnosis and for the balance of life, a person diagnosed with . Actress Beverly Garland will join in the opening ceremonies by starting off participating cancer survivors on a lap around the track. There will be plenty for participants to do when they are not on the track or resting in their tents or lawn chairs, with food donated by restaurants, games planned for the children and music from bands and a DJ.
