A WEEKEND TO HELP AT RELAY, SHOW.

Byline: Alex Dobuzinskis Staff Writer

GLENDALE Glendale.

1 City (1990 pop. 148,134), Maricopa co., S central Ariz., adjacent to Phoenix; inc. 1910. It is located in a rich agricultural region irrigated by the Salt River project. Glendale has become one of the fastest-growing U.S. cities, marked by a population increase of more than 52% between 1980 and 1990. It has food-processing plants and is a shipping point for fruits and vegetables.
 - A 24-hour relay to raise money for the American Cancer Society and a Glendale Sunrise Rotary Club concert for Hurricane Katrina relief will both happen Saturday, organizers said.

The Glendale Relay for Life, in which participants form teams and take turns walking or running around a track, is in its second year. The relay raised $47,000 for the American Cancer Society, and this time organizers want to collect $100,000.

The event starts Saturday morning at Scholl Canyon Baseball Field. A closing ceremony will start at 9 a.m. on Sunday, and all the participants take a final lap at the end of the event.

``Whatever time you come you'll see people walking,'' said Linda Patrick, a cancer survivor and the event's co-chair.

The money raised in the event comes mostly from the participating teams, who get friends and family to sponsor them. Last year's event had 22 teams; this year organizers expect 45 teams - or 672 participants, 80 of whom will be cancer survivors.

Actress Beverly Garland will join in the opening ceremonies by starting off participating cancer survivors on a lap around the track.

There will be plenty for participants to do when they are not on the track or resting in their tents or lawn chairs, with food donated by restaurants, games planned for the children and music from bands and a DJ. City employees will make a midnight snack of soup and sandwiches and the Glendale Fire Department will cook up a pancake breakfast on Sunday.

``I think we're going to have a really good turnout. I'm excited about it,'' Patrick said.

The Glendale Sunrise Rotary Club also has a fundraiser planned for Saturday. The event at Glendale High School will feature family music and games for children from noon to 6 p.m., and another concert from 6-9 p.m.

The headlining act will be the Darrell Mansfield Blues Band. Other performers include the rock band Union of Saints and jazz trumpeter David Longoria. The event will raise money for the Salvation Army to help victims of Hurricane Katrina.

The Glendale Sunrise Rotary Club will donate $500 to the Glendale Relay for Life.

``We had hoped to take part and (Saturday) was the only day that we could get the stadium from the school, so that's kind of the date that we were given,'' said Stephen Ropfogel, president of the Glendale Sunrise Rotary Club.

``I'd encourage people to do both,'' he said.
