 Phoenix, who embarks on a journey to find the pearls he had in a vision. Dreams of becoming rich and famous encourage his journey, as he meets other animals and listens to their stories. Yet those who want the pearls for themselves try to trick him, and Phoenix begins to doubt whether the pearls exist. At last, he makes a friend in Edgar who reads from and old book, and inspires Phoenix to renew his quest--understanding that to find the pearls, he must open their greatest secret. A moving parable parable, the term translates the Hebrew word "mashal"—a term denoting a metaphor, or an enigmatic saying or an analogy. In the Greco-Roman rhetorical tradition, however, "parables" were illustrative narrative examples. Jewish teachers of the 1st cent. A.D.  about finding one's own path and seeking the truth in a complicated and confusing world.
