Robilant based this novel on letters discovered in his own father's effects. Like the author, the listener will be caught up in the story of two 18th-century lovers who, despite their intense love, are forbidden by custom and family to ever have a socially accepted relationship. Their love story is mixed in with the history of the Italian Republic After World War II and the overthrow of Mussolini's fascist regime, Italy's history was dominated by the Democrazia Cristiana (DC - Christian-Democrats) party for forty years, while the opposition was led by the Italian Communist Party (PCI); this condition endured until the  and the life of the famous lover, Casanova. The locales of Venice and other Italian settings add to the charm and poignancy of their forbidden love, yet in spite of in opposition to all efforts of; in defiance or contempt of; notwithstanding.
