 introduced the world's first polio vaccine Two polio vaccines are used throughout the world to combat polio. The first was developed by Jonas Salk, first tested in 1952, and announced to the world by Salk on April 12, 1955. It consists of an injected dose of inactivated (dead) poliovirus. . To commemorate the anniversary, the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History The National Museum of American History is a museum administered by the Smithsonian Institution and located in Washington, D.C., on the National Mall. It opened in 1964 as the Museum of History and Technology and adopted its current name in 1980.  is opening a new exhibit called "Whatever Happened to Polio polio: see poliomyelitis. ?" Dr. Katherine Ott is the project director and curator at the museum.
