A VERSATILE SPIRIT PARACLETE'S PHELAN TAKES CHARGE ON OFFENSE, DEFENSE.

LANCASTER - Geoff Phelan once envisioned himself a clone clone, group of organisms, all of which are descended from a single individual through asexual reproduction, as in a pure cell culture of bacteria. Except for changes in the hereditary material that come about by mutation, all members of a clone are genetically  of his big brother.

Matt Phelan, eight years older than Geoff, parlayed his career as a Paraclete High offensive lineman Lineman or linesman may refer to:

scholarship. The younger Phelan was on his way to developing into a smaller version of his brother, starting at offensive guard for a Southern Section Division XII championship team.

But last year, a new coaching staff had a different concept for Geoff Phelan: playing defense. One year later, he won another title and All- Southern Section honors at inside linebacker.

``It's been perfect here,'' said Phelan, one of the senior leaders seeking a fifth consecutive section championship for the Spirits. ``I've had everything I wanted. I have great coaches and I'm on a great team.''

Geoff was a regular spectator Spectator, English daily periodical published jointly by Joseph Addison and Richard Steele with occasional contributions from other writers. It succeeded the Tatler, a periodical begun by Steele on Apr. 12, 1709, under the pseudonym Isaac Bickerstaff.  at Matt's Paraclete and UCLA games.

``I'd get really into it,'' Geoff said of watching the Spirits play. ``It made me want to play for Paraclete.''

And he figured the offensive line was where he'd make the biggest impact. But his role changed when Jeff Cortez became head coach.

``When we started out, coach Cortez says, 'I'll take a quarterback, I'll take a center, and I'll take (running back) Curtis Brown

, and you can have whoever else you want,' '' said defensive coordinator A defensive coordinator typically refers to a coach on a football team in the National Football League or college football who is in charge of the defense. This position aids the head coach a great deal in many ways by delegating play calling to other coaches and allowing the head  Kenny Nelsen. ``I looked at our roster and said, 'I've got to have Geoff Phelan.' Making his debut as a defensive starter against St. Bonaventure of Ventura's prolific offense in 2000 did little to improve Phelan's mood about being a linebacker instead of an offensive guard. The Seraphs' huge offensive line created running room for their bevy bevy

``It was pretty bad because I was going against a big tackle and I couldn't get around him,'' Phelan said. ``They wanted me to stick it out.''

A week later against St. Monica, Phelan recalled getting a sack that Nelsen described as ``he about popped the helmet off a guy.''

``He was better because of that game,'' Cortez said of the St. Bonaventure loss. ``Within the first five plays of the (St. Monica) game, he had a big hit and got really excited about playing defense. From there on, he got more and more comfortable.''

In decisive Alpha League wins over strong offenses from L.A. Baptist and Kilpatrick, an improved Phelan quietly was effective while being overshadowed by high-profile teammates Michael Washington, Alex Williams and Joe Martin.

In the Division XII championship game, Phelan played what his coaches called his best game in Paraclete's 14-12 win over a Montclair Prep team that raced past almost every defense it encountered.

``He did not make a mistake in that game. ... He has a fantastic motor. Geoff's glue glue: see adhesive.

 out there,'' Nelsen said.

Now a respected defensive player, his career has come full circle. He's a two-way starter at linebacker and back on the offensive line, just like Matt.

Phelan aced another exam in the Spirits' season-opening win over Chaminade. He held his own against highly regarded Eagles' tight end Jesse Taylor.

He's also durable, playing every defensive snap and all but three plays on offense.

``He played like a senior,'' Cortez said of the 26-21 victory over the Division III
