card workshop Sunday at the University of Oregon's Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art is an art museum located on the campus of the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon. The original building was designed by Ellis F. Lawrence as part of his "main university quadrangle," now known as the Memorial Quadrangle. , Kayla Cassidy cut her finger with a linoleum linoleum (lĭnō`lēəm), resilient floor or wall covering made of burlap, canvas, or felt, surfaced with a composition of wood flour, oxidized linseed oil, gums or other ingredients, and coloring matter.  cutter.

A thin trail of blood on her hand-stenciled card was Cassidy's first hint that something was awry.

"I'd rather have a pink Day-Glo card than a bloody card. I guess you could say this is my bloody valentine," said Cassidy, 13.

Twelve budding artists gathered for the three-hour workshop led by Diane Rios, a print-making teacher and local artist. Homemade cards offer a personalized touch not found in mass-produced ones, Rios said.

"Homemade cards are straight from the heart," she said.

Designs were drafted by pencil and etched into a rubber stamp by a linoleum cutter. A roller was then used to apply water-soluble ink to the stamp, which was applied to card stock. The rubber stamp templates can also be used to make bookmarks, gift bag imprints and other applications.

Rios' mother, Karin Edla of Eugene, fashioned a series of pink, heart-shaped valentines.

"I just like the tactile sensation of cutting rubber stamps and then having an instant image," she said.

Cards were also festooned with sequins, rhinestones and ribbons.
