But crowds will boo everything except mother love and Pete Rose We did not understand Toni's gesture. What exactly was her message? Was it: Look at me, I'm against the war... Wake up to what's happening... Become more concerned... Write your congressman... We have to stop this war. We had a hard time taking her seriously. She may have been a rebel with a cause. But the time and the place and the gesture itself were all wrong. And probably futile. Toni did not deserve any medals for free speech and enlightened patriotism. When a person puts on a team uniform, she becomes a team member and a representative of her school and community--and for what they stand. She does not align with her team for the playing of the national anthem and then turn her back on the flag. That makes her disrespectful--and, worse, disloyal. The flag is not a current fashion or a license for debate. It is our history; it is George Washington and Abraham Lincoln; it is our honor and specialness as a democracy. It is the best of us and the least of us. And you don't burn it, tear it, spit on it, or turn your back on it... for any reason.
