A TOT OF MACALAN; Distillers toast boy named after whisky.

Byline: KAREN BALE

A COUPLE who named their baby after their favourite whisky were yesterday rewarded by the famous distillery.

Last night, Alan and Valerie Paterson were enjoying a celebratory dram after bosses at the The Macallan put aside a six- bottle case for them.

Valerie said: "Our minds were made up when we discovered Macallan means son of Alan."

But they omitted one `l' to ensure it mimics the spelling of his dad's name. Macalan is now nine months old but when bosses at the award-winning Speyside distillery heard of the accolade, they laid down a case of 18-year-old single malt for their namesake name·sake

The couple, from Irvine, Ayrshire, fell in love with the famous whisky on a romantic trip to Oban.

Stumped at what to call their unborn baby, they found inspiration in their first dram.

Valerie said: "We had been experimenting with malt whiskies for a while but The Macallan was the best yet.

"We said then if we had a son he would definitely be named after the best malt whisky malt whisky

But trends show that by 2019, each bottle will be worth pounds 129 - a 10 per cent-a-year appreciation - making the gift worth nearly pounds 800.

Earlier this year, a bottle of The Macallan 60-year-old was bought by an anonymous collector for pounds 20,150.
