A TIGHT RACE FOR NO. 1 NETWORK.

Byline: Associated Press

It may not rival NBC's ``must-see TV'' yet, but CBS' increasingly strong Sunday night lineup was a big boost for the network in a tight three-way ratings struggle.

Three programs aired by CBS (Cell Broadcast Service) See cell broadcast.  on Sunday night finished among last week's 10 top-rated shows - just after NBC's powerful Thursday night lineup, Nielsen Media Research said Tuesday.

CBS' ``Touched by an Angel'' keeps creeping up in the ratings and finished seventh for the week. The venerable ``60 Minutes'' and CBS' Sunday movie, ``Old Man,'' also both finished in the top 10.

The five prime-time shows in NBC's Thursday night lineup were the five highest-rated shows of the week. But Nielsen's figures showed alarming erosion for the lineup's rookie: ``The Naked Truth'' has an estimated 8.7 million fewer viewers than the show that precedes it, ``Seinfeld.''

A rating point represents 970,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 97 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of televisions in use and tuned to a show during a certain time period.
