After many years building houses for the village folk, he wants his own home "to share all the joys of his heart." His construction attracts a young orphan reindeer whose "company brightens the darkest of winter days," so the carpenter names Little Star. Just when the task of completing his house in time for Christmas seems impossible, the villagers band together to help the carpenter realize his yuletide dream. He creates a wonderful surprise for them of a Christmas creche out in the woods, which Little Star leads them to. Additionally, each child gets a carving of the reindeer but the baby Jesus in the grotto is what they will cherish forever. A weakness of A Star For Christmas is that Romance may have crammed too many stories into one Nativity narrative so that fluidity in progression of any single theme becomes lost. The writing is loosely crafted and disappointingly, for all its strong Catholic undertones, there is no Christmas mass. But a child won't notice, especially given the gripping beauty of Romances' 27 original paintings that illustrate this winter wonderland tale. For its attempt to spread the true story of Christmas, A Star For Christmas is a commendable effort. |
