A Sound idea to help youngsters; SHINE: Community music project for teenagers awarded pounds 500,000 grant.Byline: Vicky Farncombe A BIRMINGHAM-based music project which aims to inspire young people who may be at risk of turning to crime has been awarded a grant of pounds 500,000. The money will be used to fund Shine, an ambitious 18-month programme targeted in five areas of Birmingham where there is high levels of youth offending. More than 800 teenagers are set to take part in a range of music activities in Erdington, Hodge Hill Hodge Hill is an area seven km east of Birmingham city centre, England. It is also a council constituency, managed by its own district committee. The constituency includes the smaller constituency ward and the wards of Bordesley Green, Shard End and Washwood Heath. , Hall Green, Northfield and Ladywood on Friday and Saturday evenings. The sessions are expected to include DJing, mixing and singing as well as more theoretical-based classes with professional musicians and record producers drafted in to share their expertise. Development agency Sound It Out beat off stiff competition to win the award - around 400 organisations applied to the Department of Children, Schools and Families' Youth Sector Development Fund, and only 25 awards were made nationally. Sound It Out was established in 1992 and has worked for over 17 years across the West Midlands West Midlands, former metropolitan county, central England. Created in the 1974 local government reorganization, the county embraced the Birmingham conurbation and comprised seven metropolitan districts: Walsall, Wolverhampton, Dudley, Sandwell, Birmingham, Solihull, to provide positive opportunities for individuals and communities. The Shine programme will provide more than 17,000 music opportunities between October 2009 and March 2011 to teenagers who wouldn't otherwise access them. Matthew Daniels added: "What we are providing here is a cohesive offer of practical and theoretical music activity that bridges the formal and non-formal music sectors. "By giving young people direct access to music industry specialists and professionals, we're going to be providing a broad range of career opportunities across all sectors of the music industry. "We believe that this cohesive offer will strengthen the whole music sector for years to come," he added.
