Jean must postpone her first big legal case to battle, instead, her grandmother and uncle over the land willed to her mother. In the process, however, Jean fights family grudges and old memories that just won't seem to go away.

Notwithstanding the wonderful use of language, after a slow start, this text is most powerful as it parallels what Jean sees as the trivialities of life on the island with her life in San Francisco.
