A Ship called Sandra.

The esteem with which the Mediterranean Shipping Company holds the man who runs the South African operation, Captain Salvatore Sarno, became evident when they named a ship after his wife.

The sleek, 273m merchantship, MSC (1) (MSC.Software Corporation, Santa Ana, CA, www.mscsoftware.com) Founded in 1963 by Richard H. MacNeal and Robert G. Schwendler, MSC is the world's largest provider of mechanical computer aided engineering (MCAE) strategies, simulation software and services.  Sandra, was launched last October with the traditional bottle of champagne across the bows. Captain Sarno said of the ceremony: "My wife Sandra and I have experienced one of the most emotional days of our lives - it is an old dream come true.

, Switzerland, is a privately owned shipping line, founded in 1970.

It has grown rapidly to become one of the leading global lines, growing its fleet to reach the rank of the world's second largest carrier in 1998 in terms of the number of vessels operated (134) and the 4th largest carrier in respect of container slot capacity.

Four new vessels, each with a capacity of 4000 containers came into service at the end of last year, and further maxi-class ships each carrying 6,400 TEUs have been commissioned for delivery beginning in June this year.

An employer of more than 800 local people, MSC has invested more than R130m to establish a strong South African presence. The company owns buildings in Durban, Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth Port Elizabeth, city (1991 pop. 670,653), Eastern Cape, SE South Africa, on Algoa Bay, an arm of the Indian Ocean. MSC has a unique Neapolitan credo. The majority of employees - directors and sailors alike - originated from Sorrento.

They, like Capt Sarno, brought their wives along and they also joined the company, partly to give them something to do and partly to learn English. Whether by accident or design, the husband and wife teams has worked well for MSC.

The Neapolitan philosophy imbued the company with an Italian warmth, and a belief in friendship, trust, honesty and integrity.

It obviously works and is evident in the loyalty of MSC's employees many of whom have been with the company since its inception.

As captain Sarno will tell you, both the Italians and South Africans employed by MSC are not members of staff, but members of the MSC family.

THE FISH THAT TIME FORGOT

Now a thriving colony has been discovered in deep, but diveable, water at Sodwana Bay near the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park on the northern Zululand coast. Scuba divers from around the world are booking with local diving operators to descend the depths and see for themselves the remarkable fish that time forgot.
