PEARBLOSSOM - Highland High's Caitlin Caitlin, also spelled in numerous other ways,[1] is a given name for a female. The name has an Irish origin. Caitlin was originally an Irish Gaelic form of Catherine.  Fitzgerald was honest about her expectations entering the season's first Golden League meet, held last week at Pearblossom Park.

``I went into the race expecting to finish second to Brienna (Morris),'' Fitzgerald said, ``because that's always the way it is.''

That's why Fitzgerald was ``more than a little surprised'' with the result. She beat Morris by 30 seconds over the 3.1-mile course (19 minutes, 10 seconds to 19:40).

I final.

Fitzgerald was slightly trailing Morris after the first mile, but the Highland runner built about a 10-second lead after two miles. The second mile was almost all uphill, which Fitzgerald said she prefers to running on flat ground. She credited ``a heck heck

of a lot of hill workouts'' to her ability to pass Morris.

``Once I caught her, I figured I might as well keep going,'' Fitzgerald said. ``For me to beat her, I must be doing something right.''

Morris didn't seem concerned with the result. The individual Golden League title is decided at league finals, not the two regular-season meets. Morris lost to another Highland runner, Alyssa Craft, in the first two Golden meets last year but won at the finals.

Morris finished second Saturday in the girls' Div. I unseeded race at the prestigious Stanford Invitational in·vi·ta·tion·al

Paraclete would have won had the last five of its seven finishers' positions counted instead of the first five.

A team is allowed seven members, but only the top five count toward the team score.

The Eagles' girls finished third at Pearblossom Park. Lancaster's boys finished second, led by Irvin Garcia's first-place finish, in 16:57.

--Showdown: The High Desert Invitational girls' small-schools race Sept. 16 at Pelona Vista was a rare regular-season opportunity for Paraclete and Desert Christian to meet. The Lancaster schools, ranked Nos. 3 and 5 in Southern Section Div. IV, compete in different leagues.

Paraclete placed all five scoring runners in the top 10 to win 26-42.

Paraclete's boys also won their race at the High Desert Invitational. Five of the first six finishers in the boys' small schools race were Spirits. Edwin Flores Flores, town, Guatemala
