A SUMMIT OF IDEAS AS THE WORLD'S CITIES MEET IN METRO TORONTO

METROPOLITAN TORONTO, May 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Municipal leaders are coming to Toronto for an international conference designed to help local governments meet the challenges of the new world order.
The Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto will host the 31st Congress of the International Union of Local Authorities (IULA) at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre from June 12-17. IULA is the oldest, most prestigious organization of local and regional governments, and the only one with permanent standing at the United Nations. This is its first Congress in North America.
Four themes -- participatory local government, economic vitality, environmental integrity and community well-being -- will expose Congress delegates to strategies and initiatives from around the world.
The Congress features study tours during which delegates will see how local governments in Metropolitan Toronto and vicinity are addressing the challenges of their urbanized communities. A tour of Toronto's revitalized Port Industrial District, an overview of support mechanisms for new and innovative industries and field trips focussing on environmental regeneration are among the options.
Metropolitan Toronto -- better known locally as "Metro" -- is Canada's largest urban area. It was selected by the United Nations in 1992 as the most ethnoculturally diverse metropolis in the world, is the financial and commercial center of Canada and boasts many cultural, sports and entertainment opportunities. An orientation package is available to help delegates and other visitors to the Congress enjoy their visit to Metro.
Anyone wishing to obtain more information or to register should contact Sandra Jackson at the IULA Congress Secretariat in Toronto at 416-393-8673.
