The Antelope Valley Domestic Violence Council's shelter may feel a little warmer - physically and emotionally - thanks to women in a local quilt-making group. Thimbles quilting quilting, form of needlework, almost always created by women, most of them anonymous, in which two layers of fabric on either side of an interlining (batting) are sewn together, usually with a pattern of back or running (quilting) stitches that hold the layers circle donated 13 quilts - ranging from bed size to baby size - to the shelter, many of whose clients arrive with only the clothes on their backs. ``What's nice about things like this is, it's the things we take for granted when we have our babies, the showers and the homemade home·made adj. 1. So we like to be able to give that to our new mothers when they come through,'' explained assistant director Trish Jones. ``The rest of the quilts will be given to kids, particularly the kids who have escaped without anything of their own. They'll have something nice, new that somebody thought of for them and they'll be able to call their own. And they'll be able to take it with them when they leave.'' This is the first community donation for the quilting circle, which began three years ago and is part of the Antelope Valley Quilt Association. The members make about 100 quilts a year which they have donated to various causes through the A.V. Quilting Association. ``This is just something we felt we could do,'' said quilter quilt n. 1. A coverlet or blanket made of two layers of fabric with a layer of cotton, wool, feathers, or down in between, all stitched firmly together, usually in a decorative crisscross design. 2. Glenda Barrilleaux. ``We wanted to do something for somebody that would make a big difference.'' Making quilts for the shelter was the idea of quilter Karen Stocking, who as a volunteer at Del Sur Elementary School elementary school: see school. got involved in assembling back-to-school kits for youngsters staying at the shelter. ``I knew that they were a group that was always looking for Looking for In the context of general equities, this describing a buy interest in which a dealer is asked to offer stock, often involving a capital commitment. The shelter can hold up to 65 men, women and children, and it's usually full, Jones said. The shelter doesn't often receive homemade gifts like the quilts. ``It's a real strong message to our clients about the support of the community, that people are out there thinking of them. And that they're putting not only their money into it but their time, their caring,'' she said.
