A STITCH IN KIND QUILTERS MAKE, DONATE COMFORTERS.

PALMDALE - Women and children staying at the Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

The Antelope Valley
Domestic Violence Council's shelter may feel a little warmer - physically and emotionally - thanks to women in a local quilt-making group.

``What's nice about things like this is, it's the things we take for granted when we have our babies, the showers and the homemade home·made

gifts and stuff. So we like to be able to give that to our new mothers when they come through,'' explained assistant director Trish Jones. ``The rest of the quilts will be given to kids, particularly the kids who have escaped without anything of their own. They'll have something nice, new that somebody thought of for them and they'll be able to call their own. And they'll be able to take it with them when they leave.''

This is the first community donation for the quilting circle, which began three years ago and is part of the Antelope Valley Quilt Association. The members make about 100 quilts a year which they have donated to various causes through the A.V. Quilting Association.

``This is just something we felt we could do,'' said quilter quilt

Making quilts for the shelter was the idea of quilter Karen Stocking, who as a volunteer at Del Sur Elementary School elementary school: see school.  got involved in assembling back-to-school kits for youngsters staying at the shelter.

``I knew that they were a group that was always looking for Looking for

The shelter can hold up to 65 men, women and children, and it's usually full, Jones said. The shelter doesn't often receive homemade gifts like the quilts.

``It's a real strong message to our clients about the support of the community, that people are out there thinking of them. And that they're putting not only their money into it but their time, their caring,'' she said.
