A SIGN OF THE TIMES: MAC COMES TO THE PENNSYLVANIA TURNPIKE
PHILADELPHIA, March 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission and Provident National Bank in Philadelphia have joined forces in a pilot project to introduce automatic teller machines on the toll road.
Provident National Bank is an affiliate of PNC Financial Corp (NYSE: PNC).
Now travelers and truckers heading westbound on the Pennsylvania Turnpike will be able to get instant cash via their hometown bankcard. The new Money Access Card (MAC) machine is located in the Peter J. Camiel Service Plaza at Brandywine. The service plaza is located approximately seven miles west of the Downingtown Interchange (No. 23) westbound on the turnpike's main line in Chester County.
In a marketing survey conducted last summer, 34 percent of turnpike travelers indicated they would like to see automatic teller machines (ATMs) installed on the turnpike.
The Brandywine location was chosen because it is one of the busiest service plazas on the turnpike year round.
Approximately 120,000 customers enter the service plaza monthly during the busiest months.
"We are very excited about this project," said Provident Vice President Ted Capald. "MAC machines, in busy service plazas such as this, should provide Pennsylvania's travelers with a very useful service."
The new machine is a 5070 NCR free-standing cash dispenser located in the center lobby of the service plaza's food court. It will dispense money in two denominations, $5 and $20. Any customer whose bank card is on the PLUS or CIRRUS nationwide network will be able to use the new MAC machine on the turnpike.
Turnpike Deputy Executive Director of Finance J.D. Fogarty said, "We're glad to be able to satisfy the desires of our patrons. If this venture is successful, we plan to install ATMs at the Allentown and Sideling Hill service plazas, both of which can be accessed from both sides of the highway."
Throughout the Delaware Valley, Provident National Bank has approximately 150 MAC machines available to its customers.
PNC Financial Corp is the 15th largest bank holding company in the country. It is based in Pittsburgh.
