A SIDEWAYS GLANCE : THIS WEEK'S HIT LIST.


In the latest Forbes 400, which attempts to rank the wealthiest of America's wealthy, we've been able to extract a subset of those who might not have made their money owning sports franchise but seem to be having fun spending it on new arenas and huge contracts.

Note that two L.A. teams are (or will be) in the high rollers' top five:

$17 billion: Paul Allen

Paul Gardner Allen (born January 21, 1953 in Seattle, Washington) is an American entrepreneur.

With Bill Gates, he formed Microsoft.
 (Microsoft co-founder), owns the NBA's Blazers and saved the NFL's Seahawks from moving to L.A. Allen is actually No. 2 on the Fortune 400 list behind Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates (person) Bill Gates - William Henry Gates III, Chief Executive Officer of Microsoft, which he co-founded in 1975 with Paul Allen. In 1994 Gates is a billionaire, worth $9.35b and Microsoft is worth about $27b. , who is worth a staggering $39.8 billion.

$7.8 billion: John Kluge John Werner Kluge (born September 21, 1914) is an entrepreneur who was born in Chemnitz, Germany, best known as a television industry mogul in the United States. He earned his B.A. degree in Economics from Columbia University in 1937.  (multimedia) owns the MLS' MetroStars.

$5.2 billion: Philip Anschutz Philip Frederick Anschutz (born 28 December 1939 in Russell, Kansas) is an American businessman and supporter of Christian causes. With an estimated current net worth of around $7.8 billion, he is ranked by Forbes as the 31st richest person in the USA.  (oil, railroads) not only owns the NHL's Kings but the MLS' Rapids. And we'll see if he gets a new L.A. downtown arena built.

$3.9 billion: Rupert Murdoch (News Corp.), waiting his credit-card approval on the purchase of the Dodgers.

$3.5 billion: Ted Turner (Time Warner), who owns the MLB's Braves and NBA's Hawks and has enough to fund the United Nations.

The new NHL NHL Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, see there  expansion team slated for St. Paul/Minneapolis is trying to pick a nickname from submitted suggestions. So far, we've got:

Gnats

Flying Walleye walleye, in medicine
walleye: see strabismus.
walleye, in zoology
walleye or walleyed pike: see perch.
 

Ninja Muskies

Fighting Smelt

Frozen Ears

Corn Dogs

Puckaroos

Ten Thousand Lakers

That last one has an interesting ring to it, eh?
