A SIDEWAYS GLANCE : THIS MAGIC MOMENT.

What's the most ultimate gift one could buy for a sports fan this holiday season?

How about a one-on-one game with Magic Johnson “Earvin Johnson” redirects here. For the Milwaukee Bucks center, see Ervin Johnson.

How about for $20,000?

The Classic Sports Network, the cable channel that many may not have on their systems but has drawn more and more attention because of its wealth of nostalgic sports replays, airs a half-hour ``Holiday Gift Show'' today (3 p.m. and 7 p.m.) with some items that you just can't find down at the Sears' garden department.

It's first-come, first-serve for the one-on-one game. Oh, by the way, it'll take place in Hawaii (it's a trip for two) and a portion of the proceeds goes toward the Magic Johnson Foundation.

Maybe it's nature's way of saying one shouldn't drive so fast

A British team seeking to break the world's land speed record postponed its attempt until next year because of bad weather conditions in Amman, Jordan.

Floods caused by torrential rain earlier this week had damaged a desert track, where a jet-powered car was to make the attempt, Andrew Noble Sir Andrew Noble, 1st Baronet (13 September 1831 - 22 October 1915) was a Scottish physicist noted for his work on ballistics and gunnery.

Out of the rocking chair and back to the boat

British rower Steve Redgrave, reversing his decision to retire, said Thursday he will attempt to win a fifth successive Olympic gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Games.

Redgrave, who teamed with Matthew Pinsent to win the coxless pairs at the Atlanta Games, is one of only five athletes in history to win gold at four consecutive Olympics.

If Redgrave wins a fifth gold medal in Sydney, he will become only the second athlete in history to accomplish the feat. Hungarian fencer Aladar Gerevich holds the all-time record with gold medals at six straight Olympic Games, from 1932 to 1960.

``I still feel I am young enough to carry on,'' Redgrave said. ``But I had to believe I was doing the right thing for my myself and my family.

``For four months I have not been in a boat and during that time some great opportunities have arisen - including some coaching jobs, including in Australia. They were very, very tempting, but my heart really lies with the competition.''

Redgrave's age? An ancient 34.
