A SIDEWAYS GLANCE : THE FEEL-GOOD MAGAZINE OF THE YEAR.

Byline: Tom Hoffarth

Although it's been in the works for months, the timing of Sport magazine's November issue celebrating today's heroes - more specifically, what's right with sports - couldn't be much better.

The on-field accomplishments of Mark McGwire
Mark David McGwire (born October 1, 1963 in Pomona, California) is a former professional baseball player who played the majority of his major league career with the Oakland Athletics before finishing his final years with the St. Louis Cardinals.
and Sammy Sosa Samuel Sosa Peralta (born November 12 1968 in San Pedro de Macorís, Dominican Republic) is a designated hitter for the Texas Rangers of the American League. His Major League career began when he broke in with the Texas Rangers in 1989.  combined with their off-the-field humanitarian work seems to have reversed a trend in sports coverage in which negativism negativism /neg·a·tiv·ism/ (neg´ah-ti-vizm?) opposition to suggestion or advice; behavior opposite to that appropriate to a specific situation or against the wishes of others, including direct resistance to efforts to be moved.  once dominated.

Sport magazine's approach is to look into the far-reaching effects of sports heroes with articles that a daily or weekly media outlet might not have the time or space to devote. The athletes chosen for the cover - Andre Agassi Andre Kirk Agassi (born April 29 1970, in Las Vegas, Nevada) is a former World No. 1 professional tennis player from the United States who won eight Grand Slam singles tournaments and an Olympic gold medal in singles. , Cynthia Cooper There are two different public figures with the name Cynthia Cooper:

``We're not trying to be the `good sports people' magazine, but we want to look beyond the sexy headlines and find the real-life heroes who happen to be in sports,'' said Sport associate editor David Scott. ``We're all very proud of this issue.''

The investigative work includes a look not only at the upside of some athlete's foundations, but also how they can turn sour. Jacksonville quarterback Mark Brunell, for example, raised thousands of dollars for charity but was sickened to find out that those he trusted to distribute the money weren't doing so.

More than 100 athletes whose actions have had a positive impact on society are also recognized, as are the ``bad boys'' who do good deeds such as Dennis Rodman and Marge Schott.

The issue hits newsstands on Tuesday.
