As the year 2000 approaches, this space highlights important dates in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  sports history over the last century:

Jan. 19, 1998: Chick Hearn broadcasts his 3,000th straight game for the Lakers.

 - the longest in college basketball history - is snapped at 88 games when Notre Dame comes back from an 11-point deficit with less than four minutes to play and edges the Bruins 71-70.

Jan. 20, 1980: Los Angeles' only appearance in a Super Bowl - and the first time a team had a so-called home-field advantage.

In Super Bowl XIV Super Bowl XIV was the 14th championship game of the modern National Football League (NFL). The game was played on January 20, 1980 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California following the 1979 regular season.  before 103,985 at the Rose Bowl, the Rams scrambled to take a 13-10 halftime lead. They managed a 19-17 lead going into the final quarter.

Officially introduced as the TMS320C80, it combines RISC technology with the functionality of four DSPs on one chip.  Terry Bradshaw's 73-yard pass TD to John Stallworth finally broke them. After a Franco Harris 1-yard TD run (set up by a Bradshaw-to-Stallworth 45-yard pass), Pittsburgh had a 31-19 victory and its fourth Super Bowl title.

Former USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  star Lynn Swann also had a 47-yard TD catch from Bradshaw that gave the Steelers a 17-13 lead just minutes into the second half.
