Avalon High scored the game's first 25 points before coach Bobby Carpenter called off his full-court press and substituted freely en route to a 73-22 victory Friday night over the Penelope Wolverines.

Last month, Avalon beat Penelope 150-18.

That's not even a record. Not anymore.

Two other small Texas high school teams 150 miles away Friday night made the record for most lopsided game in Texas high school basketball history their own. In the East Texas town of Goodrich, Goodrich High blasted Chester High, 144-6.

Penelope coach Ronald Jones would just as soon somebody else take the record anyway. Jones' nine-player Penelope squad is a close equivalent of the ``Bad News Bears.'' They can't shoot, pass or rebound.

Last month's win ruffled feelings in Penelope, a town of about 220 residents 65 miles south of Dallas. Avalon, a community of 130 residents 25 miles to the south, suited up and used only its top six players in its 132-point victory.

The record-setting 138-point margin run up by Goodrich beat a 132-point mark set in 1963 when Aspermont beat Mason 143-11 and tied last month by Avalon.

Goodrich led 44-2 after one quarter, 87-4 at the half and 107-4 heading into the fourth quarter. It outscored Chester 37-2 the rest of the way.

Chris Wyatt led Goodrich with 31 points. Royce Jackson led Chester with two points.

Goodrich is a town of 250 residents about 65 miles northeast of Houston. Chester, a town of about 300 residents, is located about 30 miles east of Goodrich.
