VAN NUYS - Vowing to work hard to make the city a better place for all, former Assemblyman Tony Cardenas Tony Cardenas served in the California State Assembly. In the Assembly, he had the powerful position of chair of the Budget Committee. He is now a Los Angeles City Councilman, representing the 6th district, which includes parts of the San Fernando Valley.  was officially sworn in Saturday as a member of the Los Angeles City Council The Los Angeles City Council is the governing body of the City of Los Angeles, California, United States. .

About 500 people attended the ceremony at the Marvin Braude Constituent Service Center, which was followed by an open house event. Cardenas officially started his term July 1 for the City Council's 6th District.

Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante, who roomed with Cardenas in Sacramento during Cardenas' time as an assemblyman, praised Cardenas as ``admirable, noble and the kind of person we need in elected office.''

Arturo Rodriguez, president of the United Farmworkers of America, administered the oath of office An oath of office is an oath or affirmation a person takes before undertaking the duties of an office, usually a position in government or within a religious body, although such oaths are sometimes required of officers of other organizations.  and praised Cardenas.

``He didn't stop caring for the people of the land, whose plight his family shared,'' Rodriguez said.
