A RISOUE BUSINESS; But student Dani succeeds with new burlesque mag.

BURLESQUE is a burgeoning art form.

Now, the northern burlesque scene has its own magazine, thanks to Huddersfield University student Dani Risebury.

Dani, 21, launched Burlesque magazine, as a project for her Advertising, Media and Design Management degree.

She and her fellow students put the first issue together, featuring articles on Huddersfield burlesque performer Daisy Cutter, Scottish supervixen Missy Malone and Leeds burlesque artist CeciliaGlitz Rouge, plus an interview with Yorkshire corset maker Helen Aveyard.

It was so popular among burlesque performers and fans, that Dani has now gone solo to produce a second issue, using it as her final major project.

She said: "Our brief originally was to produce a magazine for a gap in the market.

"We had an interest in burlesque and knew there was a growing scene around Huddersfield and Leeds.

"We expected it to run for once one issue, but it was so popular. I hope that once I graduate, I can continue to carry on with more issues." Dani, who is from Goole, says she has received a huge amount of support.

"The burlesque community was tightly-knit and everyone is there to help each other out.

"People were so supportive and encouraging, which has been great.

"I'm looking for more support, especially financial, to help fund future issues of the magazine." The second issue of Burlesque will be launched with a glitzy party on April 8 at The Ringside in Hull, where there will be performances from burlesque artists Scarlet Fever, Mini Demure and The Boneshakers.

Dani herself will be making her stage debut..

She said: "I am quite scared and nervous about it, but it's going to be a great experience." There will also be goods on sale, including copies of the magazine, which is being sold through burlesque nights and outfit stockists.

"It's centred around the luscious ladies of the burlesque world. It embraces everything fabulous about being feminine with a sprinkle of striptease, comedy and glamour." Dani means the magazine, but the same could also be said of burlesque itself.

It is an art form once seen as old-fashioned by some, or seedy by others, because of its striptease element.

But, in reality, burlesque combines comedy, cabaret, glamour, drama, dance and music, as well as titillation.

Dani puts its resurgence down to greater public awareness.

"Burlesque has been in the public eye because of individuals like Dita Von Teese who have been in the media.

"It has made people aware of what burlesque is and they tend to see it as something classy and sophisticated entertainment.

"It is something different and people want to know more."
