, a 4.9 hectare site bordering Jamaica Bay Jamaica Bay, c.20 sq mi (50 sq km), SW Long Island, SE N.Y., separated from the Atlantic Ocean by Rockaway Peninsula; the Rockaway Inlet links it to the sea. The shallow bay has many islands, and its shores are generally marshy. , consists of 144 species with 116 genera genera, in taxonomy: see classification.  and 53 families. The largest families in the flora are the Asteraceae (21 species) and Poaceae (17 species). The rarest plant observed is Aster tenuifolius, a New York State rare plant. The largest genus is Trifolium (5 species); all Trifolium species are alien. Non-native species, 52.12% of the flora, are a major component of the natural vegetation.
