A Power-Point handbook for offensive linemen.

As an offensive line coach for 18 years, I used to spend count-less hours reviewing technique, terminology, and responsibilities. And each year I would tell myself that there had to be a better way to communicate with offensive linemen n. pl. 1. the football players who line up on the line of scrimmage.

Noun 1. linemen - the football players who line up on the line of scrimmage
.

Our school had approximately ap·prox·i·mate

1. Almost exact or correct: the approximate time of the accident.

2.
200 athletes who played football on five levels. Since half of them were offensive linemen, it was essential to economize e·con·o·mize

1. To practice economy, as by avoiding waste or reducing expenditures.

on teaching time, and the way we did it was by teaching each of them the same terminology, blocking schemes, and techniques.

We realized that our young people came in every size, shape, and skill level and were graduates of a wide variety of teaching styles. Some were visual learners, others were auditory auditory /au·di·to·ry/ (aw´di-tor?e)

It was obviously impossible to teach everyone in exactly the same fashion. But over the years I noticed that almost all of them had very strong computer comprehension comprehension

Act of or capacity for grasping with the intellect. The term is most often used in connection with tests of reading skills and language abilities, though other abilities (e.g., mathematical reasoning) may also be examined.
. Could I create a medium that would enable the students to use their home PC's to help comprehend the terminology, technique, and blocking assignments on the football field?

Last summer I spent approximately 25 hours developing a Power Point presentation for the 24 offensive linemen that I would be coaching in the fall.

A Power Point presentation consists of a series of slides that contain text, video, pictures, graphics, and sound. Students are far more familiar with such presentations than the average football coach.

My goal was to create something that the athletes could view and review for information on the techniques, terminology, and blocking assignments that they were learning on the practice field.

After piloting this idea with the sophomore football team, I found the answers to our teaching problems.

I collected all of the e-mail addresses See Internet address.

and would like them to let me know (before the season) how they liked it.

After completing the handbook, I asked the head coach and all the offensive line coaches for their evaluation of it. Both the head coach and the offensive line coaches responded with praise and excitement and wanted to know how and when we would begin using it.

After several practices, I began e-mailing the athletes for feedback and to inform them of the plays we were going to add in a day or two.

[FIGURE 4 OMITTED]

It did not take long to see the fruits of my labor. For the first time, I found my athletes coming up to me before practice and discussing the techniques and blocking rules that were going to be taught that day.

[FIGURE 5 OMITTED]

The athletes on the practice field were no different than the students in my classes. They were excited and eager to learn the new plays and review and study the techniques for the upcoming practices.

[FIGURE 6 OMITTED]

It was very satisfying to see the practice time utilized so well. I quickly found more time to work on fundamentals instead of reviewing assignments. The athletes truly bought into this new format and took advantage of the computer skills they had developed.

I would urge coaches to take advantage of this medium and give it a try. You really have nothing to lose. If you would like to contact me about this article or my handbook, you may e-mail me at spagnolr@newtrier.k12.il.us.
