Although Native American tradition holds some patent over the language, all cultures throughout the world have some form of Vision Quest in their society. For example, Lamas in Nepal and Tibet sit in retreat and consult astrology for future vision. Yogis retreat to caves. Chris Walker offers a modern version of a vision quest for individuals and couples. The First step - Learning the Nature of Mind. There is significant confusion about vision. To be happy, we really must learn to be thankful for what we have, as it is, without change. So, the idea of a vision can be a contradiction to happiness. Many people start to dream of a better future, and in doing this loose the joy and happiness that comes from being happy with things as they are. That, is the most important awareness. You must not start to create a vision of the future thinking this will cause you more love, more happiness or more joy. No, today is the best day, make today the best day of your entire life, no matter what happens, this moment is the moment of love. The Second Step - A purpose greater than Self. Then, you might do a vision quest, because you also have an obligation to nature to grow, to move yourself in the direction of your potential. To live without a path is to be imprisoned by your feelings. If you live by your feelings, (emotion) then you are guaranteed to swing through pain and suffering then pleasure and happiness. But at the end of those swings, all you will have achieved is a memory of ups and downs, highs and lows. Like a tree that sways in the breeze but does not grow stronger from each experience, it will eventually decay, wither and rot. The Third Step - Separating Ego from Love Emotion causes disease. A person who is living from ego is living with emotion and therefore they will become diseased, old before their time, confused and disheartened. Nature destroys those things that are not fulfilling their purpose. She uses disease because those things that are not growing she kills. She uses the resources for her benefit, nature wastes nothing. So she attacks your relationship, your health, your bank if you are not growing. Ego stunts human growth. Step Four - Finding the order in the Chaos Natures defines growth as "taking more responsibility" and taking more responsibility means affecting, leading, helping, serving more and more people. So those who are self serving, living life to create more calm, more peace in their lives are attracting disaster. The way to guarantee that you are growing is to undertake vision quests each year, listen to your inner guides, your outer calling and write what is in your heart. This is Natures Vision Quest. The final awareness - The fifth step - Linking your vision to your relationship A relationship that is built on a constantly evolving sense of responsibility is a relationship that will remain sacred, magnetic and highly sexually charged. Lovers who share an ever expanding dream are lovers that have a higher cause. At first that cause might be a family and children, but the definition of family might grow to include the broader world, and the definition of children might grow to include all children of the earth. There might be an orphanage or a children''s book to help children love. The vesica picies is a symbol of two circles overlapping by only 33.3%. This is the universal definition of relationship. Visions of the Future The primary purpose of life is to express beauty. Beauty is perfect order, the basic structure of Cosmos, This same beauty is reflected in any form, action, or idea that embraces this order. Anything which does not provide us with a sense of this beauty has failed in its purpose, for our intellect, which contains within itself this same cosmic order can recognise its presence or absence. Hence, a relationship without beauty, is outside the realm of the purpose of life. Our vision of the future must therefore contain All the beauty of life Pure Vision requires stillness "Give me a few hours by myself, let me alone, shut out all interruptions, and I can bring myself down to my work. I take my pen in hand. I write a few thoughts. I see the future. And realise my responsibility. The more I think of the duty placed on me, the graver since my responsibility. Every idea has weight. I can see the effect of days ahead." Chris Walker is a world leading change agent, an environmentalist and author of more than 20 books.
