A POWER STRUGGLE IN MARMONTE LEAGUE.

Byline: Heather Gripp Daily News Staff Writer

For power hitters and power pitchers, look no further than Wednesday's matchup between the Royal High and Westlake baseball teams.

The Highlanders have senior Scott Rice, whose pitches have been clocked in the 90s. He also leads the team with seven home runs, one ahead of Brian Lipman.

The Warriors counter with hard-throwing junior Jesse Kozlowski. Like the Highlanders, their batting order is full of home run threats. Kevin Howard has a team-high seven homers.

Royal beat Westlake 9-5 earlier in the season. The loss was the Warriors' first of the year. They have since slid into a tie for third after losing to Newbury Park on Friday. A win against the league-leading Highlanders would put Westlake right back in the race for the title. Agoura proved Royal is beatable last week when the last-place Chargers became the first Marmonte League team to beat the Highlanders.

The host Warriors haven't lost two games in a row all season and are undefeated at home.

Swimming: The Westlake girls face their biggest obstacle on the way to a Marmonte title when they face Royal on Wednesday. Both teams are undefeated in league.

The Highlanders are coming off a third-place finish at Saturday's Royal Invitational. Royal sophomore Carly Huffman won the 50 freestyle at the meet. She could give the Highlanders a big boost if she does so again Wednesday since Westlake's Tyran O'Leary is the defending league champ and a Southern Section finalist in the event.

Royal's Ryan Southwick and Westlake's Eric Patton compete for the Marmonte diving title starting with the league prelims Friday at Rancho Simi Park.

In the Frontier League, the Calabasas girls swim for a perfect record during the league's regular season when the Coyotes host Buckley today. Calabasas then has a week off to prepare for the league prelims.
