A PASSING FANCY RECEIVING CONNECTION NOTRE DAME RECEIVER HORTON NOW THROWING PASSES TO STANTON.

Byline: IVAN OROZCO Staff Writer

It was only practice, but Shane Horton couldn't help himself. His pass deep down the sideline was acrobatically snagged by Mike Stanton William Michael (Mike) Stanton (born June 2, 1967 in Houston, Texas) is a left-handed specialist relief pitcher in Major League Baseball for the Cincinnati Reds.

From 1989 through 2006, Stanton has posted a 67-60 record with a 3.

Falling backward with a defender in his face, Stanton juggled the football between his hands before pulling it in.

It's not rare to see Horton and Stanton create big plays for the Knights' offense. They've been recognized as two of the area's top receivers, but now Horton is impressing with his play in the backfield.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pounder is filling in for quarterback Dayne Crist, who injured his back early in the Knights' season-opening victory at Canyon of Canyon Country.

It's uncertain when Crist will return to action. He didn't practice Tuesday or Wednesday, with Horton taking all the snaps with the first-team offense.

Knights' head coach Kevin Rooney Kevin Rooney born on May 4, 1956 in Catskill, NY and is a boxing trainer and former boxer. Amateur Boxing Career

plans to start Horton in Notre Dame's showdown Friday night against Birmingham of Lake Balboa and keep him as starter until Crist is cleared to play.

``Shane (Horton) is one of those guys that does everything you ask him to,'' Rooney said. ``He's always prepared. He hadn't practiced all week at quarterback last week until Thursday, when we knew Dayne couldn't go.''

Not enough reps at quarterback? That didn't matter.

Horton led the Knights to a 38-6 win against Lynwood, throwing two touchdown passes and running for two more.

``It's something that's in me.'' Horton said. ``I was raised to lead. It didn't seem like a question in my head that I should not do it. It's kind of second nature to me.''

When Notre Dame is at full strength, he's a go-to receiver whose strengths complement those of Stanton, a 6-foot-5 speedster speed·ster

He definitely is a leader. He helps underclassmen tighten their routes.''

Consistency is Horton's strength. And both are excellent defensive players. Stanton, a cornerback, towers over most receivers he covers. Horton, a safety, is capable of filling in to stop the run or blanket receivers, and he has two interceptions this season.

But it's on offense where they thrive.

``Every time they touch the ball, there's a chance for a big play,'' Crist said. ``Some of the catches they make on poor throws on my part ... they just somehow come down with it.''

Crist wasn't surprised by Horton's quarterbacking last week.

``I knew it wasn't going to be a crazy transition or anything,'' Crist said. ``He knows what he's doing. He's been in this system for a while.''

The Knights' receiver-quarterback combo might be tested against Birmingham. The Patriots feature two speedy and aggressive defensive backs, Dominic Baker and Willie Chandler.

The Seraphs, who put together a 43-game winning streak from 1999-2002, have won back-to-back Southern Section Div.IV titles and six championships in seven seasons, the first three coming in Div.XI. Since 1996, St. Bonaventure is 117-10-1, with six of those losses coming in the 1997-98 seasons.

Oaks Christian, 63-5-1 since the beginning of the 2001 season, has captured three consecutive Div. XI titles, one of six area 11-man teams to accomplish the feat.

In the past 25 years, other area teams have enjoyed similar success, beginning with Canyon of Canyon Country in 1983-86. The Cowboys captured three successive championships in 1983-85, part of their 46-game winning streak, tied for fourth all-time in state history.

In the 1990s, Hart of Newhall and Paraclete of Lancaster shared the spotlight. The Indians, who boast a combined record of 139-25-1 since 1994, have won eight division titles, including five from 1998-2003.

The Spirits are the only area football team to win five consecutive titles, winning 61 of 67 games during its run of dominance in 1997-2001.

Before Oaks Christian, Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks was the last area 11-man team to win three straight championships, putting together a run of 35 consecutive victories before having its streak halted by Dominguez of Compton in last year's Div.III championship game.

Still, the Knights rank among the most successful teams in the state during the past decade, posting a combined 107-12-1 mark since 1997.

Q & A ... WITH KEVIN MAY

Kevin May has endured his share of struggles during his three-year stint as the starting quarterback at Calabasas, which enters tonight's nonleague game against visiting Channel Islands with the longest current losing streak in the state at 34 games. It's been frustrating at times, and believe me, I've seen it all. Loss after loss after loss. Getting hit and hit and hit after every play and still coming away empty at the end of the game. Losing sucks. It hurts, especially right after the game and the next day. I'm not a quitter quit·ter

Fair enough. How do you turn things around, change the perception? Or is it too late?

So are you guaranteeing a victory?

In 20 years from now, when you look back on your high school career, how will you view, or how do you think others will view your legacy at Calabasas?

I'm not really sure. We'd like to erase the past and get rid of the losing tradition, but that's not going to happen until we break the streak. We talk about it all the time. Break the streak. Break the streak. What I do know is we have guys around here that are committed. The moral around here has been better lately. People are showing up on time for practices.
