A NEW LOOK TO THE L.A. MARATHON CHANGE IN COURSE EXPECTED TO DRAW MORE - AND BETTER - RUNNERS.

Take away bunkers, rough and water hazards from golf courses and pro players would rejoice, but few would agree the changes would make for better tournaments.

For the third time in its 17-year history, the Los Angeles Marathon The Los Angeles Marathon is an annual marathon held in Los Angeles, California since 1986. It was inspired by the success of the 1984 Summer Olympics held in Los Angeles. The race starts at about 8:15AM and runs through Downtown Los Angeles, Koreatown, the Crenshaw district, and  course has received a dramatic makeover. Gone is the dramatic climb near the end of the course that made the L.A. course perhaps the toughest among all major-city marathons. The climb has been replaced by a flat stretch of land that should lower the winning times significantly in Sunday's race.

But is faster necessarily better? In the past, the L.A. Marathon attracted elite runners who knew they were in for a challenge. Those scared away by the imposing terrain (or the relatively paltry pal·try

``We have heard from some people who said, 'I know the course was tough, but that's what I liked "That's What I Like" was a popular single by Jive Bunny & the Mastermixers.

Father and son team Andy and John Pickles repeated the formula which had took their record Swing The Mood to number one a few months previously.
about it,' '' said Marie Patrick, the race's co-founder and vice president. ``There are people out there who took pride in it, who could brag to their neighbor who ran in Chicago because our course was so much tougher.

``But we've received an overwhelmingly positive response. Everybody who has seen the new course seems to love it.''

In marathon running, a challenge is not necessarily a good thing. The goal for every major marathon, race president and co-founder Dr. William Burke William Burke (1792 - January 28, 1829) was an Irish-Scots serial killer who, along with William Hare committed a notorious series of murders in Edinburgh in the 19th century.

``In 17 years, I've never had one person come up to me and say, 'I really like those hills, can you get a few more of them?' Running 26.2 miles is never easy, not on any course, under any circumstances CIRCUMSTANCES, evidence. The particulars which accompany a fact.

, but they do whatever they can.''

Four years ago, after winning times in the L.A. Marathon had steadily risen for three consecutive years, Burke said it was his ``holy grail'' to have a winning time under 2 hours, 10 minutes. Organizers tinkered with the course and a strong field helped push Simon Bor's winning time to 2:09:25 in 1999.

Since then, however, times have risen again. Last year's winning time of 2:13:13 was the fourth-slowest in the event's history, so changes were made. Burke had e-mails sent to a large percentage of the marathon's ``alumni'' and received 30,000 responses, 80 percent of which Burke said urged changes to make the course easier.

The changes will make the course easier for the expected record turnout of more than 23,000 runners, but the real goal is to improve the course for the elite runners.

``I'm the only guy in town who cares about having faster winning times,'' Burke said. ``Marie says, 'Why are you so focused on the time?' but that's my competitive nature. I want this city to have a great event, and I want to be able to compete with every marathon in the world. I must be a slow learner though, because I've been trying for 16 years.''

There have been some positive steps toward that goal. Race organizers have resisted raising appearance and prize money, because they found in the past that it did not guarantee strong fields, but for the first time ever, two former champions will be among the men's elite pack.

The field is led by two Kenyans, 2000 champion Benson Mbithi and 2001 champion Stephen Ndungu, both of whom have the potential to break the coveted cov·et

2:09 mark. Sylmar native Peter De La Cerda is the top-seeded American in the field and is expected to stay with the Kenyan pack that usually dominates the race.

The women's elite field does not feature any former Los Angeles champions, but Aurica Buia of Romania ran 2:34:40 to win the 2001 Country Music Marathon The Country Music Marathon is located in Nashville, TN. The route begins in Centennial Park and continues along many of Nashville's sights including music row, Belmont University, the State Capitol Building, the Cumberland River, Shelby Park, Shelby Bottoms Greenway, and ends outside LP  in Nashville.

``I think the runners will love the course,'' Burke said, ``and that's what is most important.''
