A NEW ERA FOR NISSAN IN THE UK

A NEW ERA FOR NISSAN IN THE UK
LONDON, Jan. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- New Year's Day marked the first day

Nissan's brand new dealer network was open for business and the day Nissan Motor (GB) Limited took over as the distributor in the UK.
Remarkably, Nissan becomes the only foreign car maker to design, manufacture, market and sell cars in the UK. The opening of the new dealer network represents a major step in Nissan's plans to become a major force in the UK car market, mirroring the success the company already enjoys with its Sunderland car plant.
The network commences with 150 dealers, the number rising rapidly to 250 by August.
Akio Sumitomo, managing director Nissan Motor (GB), commented: "Our new company was only formally established on April 1, 1991, so we have had to work tremendously hard to recruit staff and set up the dealer network. No other leading manufacturer has ever had to build up a new dealer network in a major market in such a short time.
"I am delighted with our success and the caliber of the dealers, however, the task has certainly been more difficult than we perhaps expected. The very tough economic climate has hit even the most professional dealers. We have been very cautious about selecting financially sound dealers but we had no choice because we want our dealers to work with us for a very long time."
Underlining the excellent status of the new network, 21 publicly quoted and major private motor groups will be representing the Nissan franchise across the country.
In readiness for the opening day, more than 10,000 vehicles have been stored in the North East. A fleet of more than 300 transporters will deliver the first 3,000 cars during the first four days of January. A further 6,000 will be moved out to dealers in the remainder of January.
Every new Nissan dealer will have an excellent stock of parts from Jan. 1, 1992, supplied from Nissan's Parts Distribution Centre at Lutterworth, Leicestershire. Stocking 55,000 different parts lines, the Centre will provide dealers with the highest standards of rapid service.
"Owners may be wondering what will change at their local Nissan dealer," said Mr. Sumitomo, "now that the UK distributor is part of Nissan Motor Company. Most important, I believe customers will soon understand that everything we and our dealers do is focused on customer satisfaction. This is the philosophy that guides every aspect of our business.
"As we enter a long-term partnership with our dealers we have set them a challenging goal, to provide a level of service which exceeds the expectations of our customers."
Nissan is committed to providing the best possible training for its own employees and the dealer staff at all levels. In recent weeks, 1,300 dealer staff have received a total of almost 3,000 days of training in preparation for the start-up of the new network. The training included an extensive study of Nissan's philosophy of teamwork and continuous improvement.
It is an exciting start to what promises to be a challenging year for Nissan, which has set its sights on reaching a 4-percent market share in 1992 and growing long term to a 10-percent share in the UK.
A stream of new models, including the Sunny GTi, Sunny GTi-R, Sunny Diesel, Primera Diesel, and a new British-built small car, will help the company achieve its ambitious goals. For existing models such as the successful Primera, there has been a complete review of specifications and equipment levels for the 1992 models.
Promoting these new models in a highly professional way will be the major marketing task for 1992. Television and the national press will be used extensively to put over the Nissan values of: quality, reliability, technology and performance. Previous advertising has concentrated on price and has colored the image of the Nissan brand, said Mr. Sumitomo.
